We went around the dinner table on the last night of our family vacation, and were asked to pick the favorite part of our trip. My answer was easy; in addition to being with family of course, being unplugged was certainly my choice. No texts, no emails, no internet.
First a little perspective: I don’t carry a phone, but I do check it frequently when it’s in reach. My iphone typically resides on my desk or in my car. Sans a computer at home, the phone is the means by which I work at night and on the weekends. I don’t do Facebook, aren’t on Twitter, and you won’t catch me posting on Instagram or Pinterest. I do however look forward to reviewing the daily sales and cash reports and often text into the night and throughout the weekend with my staff.
So being unconnected for the first time in over 5 years felt a little weird for the first few days. Then I got used to it, as if that’s how it always was. How it’s supposed to be. While I appreciate and enjoy the use of technology, I will check in a little less often, and feeling refreshed, I look forward to doing it again soon. I strongly suggest you do the same.
